Working in Toronto

Discussion of the process and requirements of finding an offer of employment in Canada.

Working in Toronto

Postby slee38 on Mon Jan 11, 2010 4:16 am

Hi Andrew,
I have started the job search but am finding it difficult as I am still in Sydney Australia and am arriving in Toronto at the end of the month. I have signed up to websites such as Monster and Careerbuilder.

I would like to be able to at least have some interviews lined up soon after my arrival, whether it is with actual companies seeking employees or with agencies.

Would you please advise of some other ways I can go about searching for work? I have sales, administrative/clerical/reception, some marketing experience.

Thanks

Steph

Hi Steph:

It will be hard to line up interviews before then, but it could be done. I take it you are trying on your own and have not hired someone to help?

That is the only other way you could do it, and I offer that service.

Can you email me with your CV to: andrew@employment-canada.com

I can look at your CV and we can chat from then on.

Hi Andrew,

This is Sangeeta from India and I am planning to apply for skilled Immigration I am a Senior Merchandiser in a British Liaison office based in India (Apparel and whole sale clothing trade for top most brands of UK). My qualifications are Post grad in Literature and Bachelors degree in Humanities along with One year Diploma in Fashion and clothing Technology, but as per my knowledge my occupation is not listed under 38 approved occupations by Federal Govt. Most of the occupations are Health related and out of balance the majority of occupations are skilled labor and trade related.

Although I am scoring 77 points as below Age--10 (32 years), Qualification -- 25 (Masters), Experience -- 21 (Over 10 years in paid job), English Language skills -- 16 (IELTS - 7 band in all), Relative in Canada -- 05 (My husbands cousin brother and sister/ and his aunt - his father's real sister) even then my occupation is not allowing me to proceed further if I have to then I must have to have a job offer from Canadian employer which I don't think is as easy as it seems. Please guide me if there is any other way or if I can come as a visitor along with my Family (Me, my husband and one daughter). I have approached several companies and recruiters in Canada but of no use.

Awaiting your valuable advice.

FYI: Mailing you my detailed CV for your immediate reference.

Best regards,
Sangeeta

Hi Andrew

I am an Australian lawyer and intend to move to Toronto next year. I'm aware that I cannot practise (without converting my qualifications) so that's not a problem. I thought I'd be able to get a job as a paralegal but it seems this too is a regulated profession (at least in Ontario) for which you need certification.

I've worked in policy before too so have thought about applying for government-type jobs. My question is am I eligible for consideration? I've seen this posted on government websites

Also, you must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or authorized in writing to work in Canada under the federal Immigration Act to be eligible to apply.

I'd be applying under the Working Holiday Program (which permits Australians under 30 to work in Canada for up to 24 months without having initially secured a job offer).

Thanks for your help.

Tracey.

Tracey:

I have approved this post to point out that it is more immigration questions than it is employment questions. It would probably be best if you post some of your questions on the other forums on this site.

It would be hard at this time to determine your eligibility for work without seeing your CV. You would also need to explore the process of getting your credentials recognized in Ontario. An internet search for the relevant agencies will help you to find that out.

Using employment agencies in Canada may help as well. Searching job boards and contacting employers directly is another way.

It may be good for you to forward your CV to me and I can advise on that as well.

with regards

Andrew
