Work Visa for Contract Work

Postby bikedork on Sun May 22, 2011 4:01 pm

Hello,

I'm an American citizen seeking employment in BC. Many of the jobs opportunities I am looking at tend to be on a contract basis. I asked a lawyer I have talked to previously regarding immigration issues whether I could take a a job on a contract basis, and her response was I couldn't because it is considered self employment. I found that answer a bit strange because I'm pretty sure you can do that in the States, and after some reading online I'm under the impression she is not correct (at $250/hour).

Can I apply for a LMO and work visa for a contract job?

TIA :)

In most cases, you cannot obtain a work permit to seek self-employment in Canada in such a case as there is not pre-arranged work. However, if you secure a contract with a Canadian client - although remaining self employed while working on that contract - you may be able to seek a work permit for that project, specific to that client.
