Work Permit & spouse visa?

Postby sanbel76 on Fri Sep 09, 2005 3:21 pm

I am soon getting an offer from Candian company for which I will be filing my work permit. Is there any quota like US? How long it takes to get work permit ? Which place it should be filed to get it done fastest.
my wife is in India and she is not going to accompany. Once I get stamp can I bring her as dependent or whats the other best way?Can I do her work permit with my application? Is she exempted from HRDC if she has to file her work permit?

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks

Canada does not impose any quotas on temporary work permits granted. The typical delays for such applications can range from a single day to 6 weeks, excluding HRSDC processing delays if applicable. The details of the case as well as the mode and venue of submission will determine such delays.

Applications may generally be submitted to a visa office. In some cases, applicants are eligible to process an application at a Canadian port of entry if they are otherwise exempt from the requirement of a Canadian visitor visa. Without knowing the details of the case it is impossible to say what the best location would be.

Your spouse may be able to seek a work permit under the provisions of Spouses of Highly Skilled Workers, which would be of the same duration as your own visa. If eligible under this program, she should not be subject to the requirement of HRSDC Confirmation.

Thanks David!
I am a permanent resident (US). so since I don't need visitor visa , can I go at the port of entry to stamp work permit?
I am a Software Eng working in IT for more then 9 years. So hopefully I don't need HRDC confirmation. Is that correct?
Is it correct that processing times in NY or Washington, or LA are different.

Thanks again for your help!

Yes, US permanent residents are eligible for processing of work permits at ports of entry. In most cases in which we handle such cases, however, we try to obtain approval in advance of arrival at the port of entry to minimize the risks of complication at that time.

With a well presented application, you should be exempt from the requirements of Confirmation of the job offer.

Our experience is that there are variations in processing time from one visa office to the next, although they are not dramatic for a typical Canadian work permit application.
