Work permit required for on campus post-graduate job?

Postby Etharos on Tue Oct 31, 2006 1:59 am

I have recently accepted an on campus full-time job offer following the completion of my undergraduate degree in August 2006. I have been working full time under my study permit while all the paper work for work permit is ready. Am I not allowed to do this? I just want to clarify this.

I have also applied for a bridging study permit extension while I wait for the job offer letter with the job description to apply for the post-graduate work permit. If my original study permit expires (with the renewal being processed at Vegreville), am I allowed to work full time at my job on campus?

Many provinces allow for off-campus employment for valid study permit holders. However, these are usually limited to part time positions while the individual is a full time student. Your situation may not therefore be allowable.

While an extension application is pending, your status as of the time of the receipt of such an application remains intact.

Thank you for the reply David. Do the same conditions apply to an on-campus full-time job?

I had to re-send the Post-graduation 90 days extension(as they lost my initial application, which was sent before my study permit was expired, I had to include proof of my older application) along with a new initial work permit. While these applications are being processed on a priority basis by the Team Leader - OSS at Vegreville, am I allowed to work on campus?

You may work on campus at the institution where you study without a work permit if:

- you are engaged in full-time studies at:
i. a public post-secondary institution;
ii. a private post-secondary institution that operates under the same rules and regulations as a public institution, receives at least 50 percent of its financing for its overall operations from government grants (currently, only private college-level educational institutions in Quebec qualify); or
iii. a Canadian private institution authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees.
- you have a valid study permit.
