Work Permit Extension during wait for Permanent Residence

Postby skyking77 on Sun Sep 30, 2007 5:37 am

I am American and currently working in Canada on the 5th and final year of a NAFTA work permit. A year ago, I applied for Permanent Residency but it can take 2 years or more for PR to be decided and my current work permit might expire before my PR application is ever reviewed.

Is there a provision to extend my work permit expiration until my Permanent Residency application is heard? In other words; can proof of having submitted application for Permanent Residency 24 months prior, be sufficient to have my NAFTA work permit extended beyond the usual 5 year limit? Thanks.

Most work permits issued under NAFTA do not carry any limitation as to duration. What category was this issued in?
