Work Permit Expires This Week!

Postby ianvill on Tue Aug 28, 2007 2:42 am

Quick question:

I am working in Canada (From the US) on a work permit expiring Aug 31st. My company wants me to stay. What are the rules?

There most likely will be no extension, as the longest I will stay is through Sept 3rd anyway. In addition, there will be no return trip after this departure.

Any official documents pointing out the regulations for continuing work after permit expiration, even if only for a few days?

Thanks!
Ian.

If you intend to remain in Canada beyond the validity of your work permit, you must seek extension of that work permit. Such an application is submitted to the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville. If you intend to work after the expiration date, the only other option is to exit Canada and seek a new work permit.

If you work permit was contingent on a Labour Market Opnion, then an extension of such is required prior to extension of the work permit or issuance of a new work permit.

Thank you-

I have already determined I'll be leaving Canada since the company did not make provisions to extend my permit/visa, and the CIC website had some documents to clarify the issue.

As I work in the offshore oil/gas industry, the permit was based on a Labor Market Opinion as well.

Thanks again for the response!
