Work Permit Application, Able to apply at the border?

Postby jenniferderw on Sat May 19, 2007 3:26 am

Hello,

My husband, an Irish citizen living in the US on a spousal visa as a permanent resident, has recently been offered a position as Associate Theologian at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is due to begin work on August 1st. We have already received approval from the HRSDC. We will be bringing our 3 month old daugher, who is also a US citizen like myself. Can we bring all our paperwork and apply at the border as we are driving to Nova Scotia from Colorado? There is no visa office here locally, and we are worried about time constraints. Do we need health examinations? His job offer is a 3 year contract.
I was also wondering, how detailed do I need to be when listing the items we are bringing with us? ie. 10 skirts worth CAN$90? or Do I need to list each one and the maker etc.? How do you pay the border guard, do they take credit cards or cash? Any information would be so very helpful, as the Canadian Consulates no longer accepted inquiries via the phone.
Thank You,
Jennifer

With your LMO in hand, and as an Irish citizen, he can apply for the work permit at a port of entry on the way into Canada. The following are the general provisions regarding the need for a medical examination:

"The officer’s decision is based on the type of job you will have and where you lived in the past year.

If you wish to work in health services, child care, primary or secondary education, you will need a medical examination and a satisfactory medical assessment before a work permit can be issued to you.

If you want to work in agricultural occupations, a medical examination will be required if you have lived in certain countries."

I would recommend that you inquire about customs issues with the Canada Border Services Agency.
