Work Permit and freelancing

Postby sgiacomel on Fri Jul 15, 2011 9:42 am

Hi there,
I am a new immigrant to Canada. I came 10 months ago on a Working Holiday Visa which allowed me to be free to work for anybody. I found different jobs as freelancer (I am a computer programmer). One of the company sponsored me a work permit for 2 years, so at the moment I am tied to this company. First of all, am I allowed to freelance for the other company as well?
Second question: before changing visa, I had a kind of self employed work. My bosses told me that I didn't need a business number if my income was lower than 30,000 a year. And so far it wasn't. The company who sponsored me offered me a contract, but I haven't signed anything yet because at the border they just needed an offer of contract and not the contract itself. Now, am I eligible for a business number with my new? Because I wouldn't mind keeping my work as self employed (less rights but more free time!) and my income will go past the threshold before the end of the year.
Thanks for your help

No, you may not work for other employers on the basis of a standard work permit (i.e., one that is not specifically an open work permit). Your other question needs to be addressed to the Canada Revenue Agency.
