Urgent: Work permit duration

Postby poonawam on Mon Sep 10, 2007 11:24 pm

Hi,

I will be moving to Canada in January 2008 on a work permit obtained after a positive labor market opinion. After working in Canada until August 2008, I will have one full year of work experience and will meet the 67 point permanent residency criteria.

My question is, what will be the duration of my work permit when I first arrive in January 2008. Since the residency process takes a while, will the work permit duration be long enough to allow time for my PR application to be approved? If not, can I renew the work permit while the PR application is pending and will that create problems with intent to stay?

Thank you.

Hi,

Your PR take, nowadays, at least 1 year. So, you work permit should have a minimum duration of 1 year. Otherwise, you can get an extension of your work permit from within Canada. You must apply for the extension of your permit at least 2 months before the expiration date of your current work permit.

Both process, extension of work permit and PR, can run at the same time (i.e. you can apply at the same time).

Good Luck.

Rodrigo.
