Time required to get the canadian work permit

Hi David,
Thank you for maintaining this forum - it is a great resource for non Canadians looking to work in Canada.
I am currently working in NYC, but am in the process of looking for jobs in Toronto, and planning to move there by August. If and when I do confirm a job there, exactly how long will it take for Service Canada to approve (assuming that they will approve) the work permit, and send it to the consulate. Also, how long does it usually take to get the visa approved from the embassy? In other words, how long does the entire process of approval take, starting from the time I get the job till I get the visa? Also, like in the US, is the work permit sponsored by the employer? If not, how much are the expenses usually?
Thank you so much in advance,
Jisha

A typical Confirmation takes 30-45 days. A typical work permit takes 2-4 weeks. This is a rough guide based on the general information provided.

A Confirmation is an employer-driven application process. The work permit is candidate-driven. The government fee for a work permit is CAD$150.
