Telecommuting on a visitor visa

Postby bslinger2000 on Thu Sep 29, 2011 2:07 am

Hi there, I'm hoping somebody can give me some advice on my situation: I'm currently on a working holiday permit which expires in March, however I was hoping to stay in the country until at least May before leaving and coming back on (hopefully) a renewed working holiday permit. I'm planning on filling out the 'extend your stay' form on the website to transfer my status to being a visitor.

Here's the thing though, I currently work for a company in Australia via the internet, so I'm not actually working for a Canadian company. From what I've read I should be able to keep doing this while on a visitor visa as it's not technically working in Canada, but I'd like to avoid any difficulties that might come out of it. When stating how I'm going to support myself while on a visitor visa, should I mention that I will continue to be employed by an Australian company, or should I fudge the truth a little and say that my parents will be sending me money? (It's my Dad's company so that's not entirely untrue)

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Ben.

The general rule is that no work permit is required to engage in work for a foreign company that has no Canadian presence. Beyond that, the completion of application materials must be truthful on all occasions.
