Spousal Sponsor - Do you need to be working?

Postby billabong on Sun Apr 06, 2008 7:26 am

Can you work a normal low pay job such as a cashier while sponsoring a spouse? My spouse has his bachelors and many companies requested to speak to him. Unfortunatly they wanted him to be authorized to work in Canada. We are currently out of Canada. I want to settle in Canada because it's my homeland and continue my studies.

My question is , would they accept me working as a cashier or in retail? Is there any way my husband can work to since his position pays good in Canada?

Can I apply for open work permit for him?

I've checked but I could not find any clear answer.

My husband sponsored me for permanent residency and one thing he had to prove was that he could support me. There is an income requirement for the number of people you are planning on sponsoring. You must be employeed or show proof of funds and you can not have applied for any kind of social assistants or unemployment in the year of or before you sponsor. If you are not married then you have to prove a valid common law relationship, which they consider as living together for no less than a 12 month period.
