Does anyone know if salaries are usually quoted as before or after tax?

I got a job and was happy with the pay but my friend asked me if it was before or after tax. We earn the same amount but hers is after tax and I don't know if mine is before or after.

If the employer doesn't say then is it usually before or after tax?
