Re-entry with Canadian work-permit

Postby sandeepc0 on Fri Oct 13, 2006 12:10 pm

hi,
I have been in Canada with family for ~2 months with a work permit. My job here requires me to travel to the US for 2-3 days (frequently) for meetings etc.. I have a valid US business visa (B1). I am wondering if I will be able to re-enter Canada with my work permit (which says "No entry possible with this document").

Please help if you have any information about this.

thanks,
Sandeep

A work permit does not allow for entry or re-entry into Canada as a general rule. Those who are required to obtain a passport visa are granted a single entry (or multiple entry if sought) visitor visa which does allow for entry. If an individual with a single entry visa leaves Canada during the validity of a work permit, a new visitor visa may be required to re-enter Canada.

One exception to this rule is that holders of a single entry visa returning from a short trip to the USA may be readmitted to Canada within the validity of that original visa.

My initial work permit was extended to Dec 2011, but I have not yet left canada. My initial visa expired in Dec 2010. I am planning on taking a short trip to USA. Do I need a new visa to reenter Canada?
