Re-entry into Canada on Post Grad Work Permit

Postby scream on Sat Jan 08, 2011 12:03 pm

Hi David,
I recently received my Post Grad Work Permit for 3 years in Dec 2010. I was a undergrad Electrical Engineering student before then studying in Canada. I am leaving Canada tomorrow and traveling to India. The thing I am confused about is that my Post Grad Work Permit is valid until Dec 2013. The Permit says this does not authorize re-entry. I have a multiple entry student visa which is valid until Dec 2011. I finished my degree a year earlier than what is indicated on the visa.

So if I comeback to Canada in Feb 2011 after traveling to India, will I have a problem coming into Canada because I am no longer a student? I should have found out about this earlier but I did not think it would be a problem as I have a valid multiple entry student visa until Dec 2011.
I haven't looked for a job yet because I only received the Post Grad Permit in December.

Thanks
scream

The entry visa and work permit serve different purposes and are essentially separate. While in possession of a multiple-entry visa valid until December 2011, you will be permitted to appear at the port of entry to seek readmission in February 2011. As you hold a valid work permit, that should pose no difficulty. After December 2011, you will need to seek a new entry visa via a Canadian Consulate or High Commission in order to be able to return to Canada from travel abroad.
