Postgraduate work permit

Postby highlander15 on Tue Jun 12, 2007 10:54 pm

I have checked this forum and could not find answers to my specific situation. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I graduated with a master's degree on April 27, 2007. My study permit/visa expires on August 10, 2007. I haven't found a job yet. I have two questions:

1. If if find a job towards the end of my 90-day period (for eg. July 20, 2007) and then apply for a work permit, what if my study permit expires while I'm still waiting to receive my work permit? Am I allowed to stay in Canada beyond August 10 in this scenario?

2. If I don't find a job within the 90-day period or before my study permit expires, what are my options other than leaving the country?

I would greatly appreciate any advice in this regard. Thank you in advance.

In many cases, post-graduate work permit applications can be processed quickly enough that your status would not expire. To be safe, however, you may consider applying inland for an extension of your visitor record.

If you do not find a job, then you may consider returning to school and seeking a new study permit, or seeking to remain in Canada as a visitor. You may of course consider a permanent resident application, but delays for such cases are much longer and such an application does not grant automatic permission to remain in Canada.
