Post Grad permit expiring and switching jobs

Postby Aku on Thu Mar 29, 2007 10:43 am

Hi, I have a few questions for you. I graduated from a University in Toronto last June and got my one year post grad work permit which expires in July 2007 from the St. Clair office in Toronto. My current employer is not prepared to extend my contract. I have been interviewing with other companies and am hopeful that I can get a job soon.

-If I do get a job in April, will I have to get my work permit switched so that it’s specific to the new employer? If this is the case, will it mean that the work permit for the new employer will also expire in July 2007 and will I be able to apply for the new permit also from the St. Clair Office?

-If this employer decides to extend my contract beyond that date, what will I have to do to get this extension? LMO?

As you have graduated from a school in the Toronto area, your post-graduate work permit is limited to one year. A work permit for any position beyond that would require an LMO. Following the LMO you would typically be required to submit an extension or change of terms application to the CPC in Vegreville. The St. Claire office would issue such a work permit only in the presence of evidence of urgency.
