Open work permit question for Indian citizen

Postby Pollop on Thu Jan 05, 2012 11:26 pm

Hi David,
My husband will be moving to Canada next month as a intra company transfer from USA.His company lawyer applied for his worker visa and my visitor visa. Now I have received my visitor visa for 3 years.Since I am Indian citizen I would not be able to apply for open work permit at port of entry. My quesetion is can I apply for open work permit while I am in USA? Or can I apply for it after we enter Canada? Which option will take less time? Are there any other options? I have double masters degree in engineering and MBA with 6 years experience in IT systems analysis field.I assume my field is under NOC 2171-A.Do you see any issues I getting work permit?

You may apply for an open work permit at a Consular office while in the USA, or after your arrival in Canada through a Case Processing Centre within Canada or a visa office abroad. The ideal would have been to make such an application concurrently with your husband's application. Since that was not done, the likelihood is that applying while in the USA will offer the fastest resolution to the request. However, there are numerous variables which would affect this. In the absence of a job offer from a Canadian company, there are no options that would appear more attractive.
