Obtaining Permanent Residency, already working in Canada

Postby nufan on Mon Mar 26, 2007 10:49 pm

Hi there,

I have been working and living in Canada for the last 2.5 years on a temporary work visa. I decided to apply for permanent residency via the Provincial Nomination program which i was approved for. I sent in my passport for what i thought was the final process of Permanent Residency however the document printed into my passport had an expiry date on it and it was sent with things that i need to do once i "land in Canada".

My question is since i am already here, is there any way for them to process this? I am about an hour's drive away from the US Border, do i simply need to drive down there and show them this documentation? Or are only certain airports equipped to do this? What would i expect if they are able to help out, will they give me any trouble, will there be any more hidden costs? (has already cost quite a bit !)

Thanks for any help on this, also my current SIN has an expiry on it, do i need to have this changed?

The visa you have in your passport authorizes you to enter in Canada. On the border (port of entry) your application will be finalized. There is no way, as far as I know, to do it without exiting Canada first.

I've heard that people go to the US border at the Niagara Falls, exit and re-enter Canada in order to finalize the procedure.

In the instructions you've received there should be detailed instructions which documents you have to have when entering Canada, etc.
