My name is Kelly. I am a U.S. citizen currently going to school in Canada. I am a second year student at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia enrolled in the Bachelor of Management Program. Since I have been living in Halifax for the majority if the 2 years I am concidered to be a resident of Canada. I was wondering if I would be able to obtain a work permit that would allow my to work part-time while attending university fill-time. The types of jobs that I would be applying for would be either in the restaurant business as a server/hostess, anywhere as a cashier, or as a hairdresser at a local salon. Prior to coming to university I got my license in Cosmetology. If you could let me know if this is a possibllity for me it would be greatly appreciated.
As a full-time foreign student, you have the permission to work on campus without a work permit.
If you otherwise wish to pursue the types of jobs that you refer to in your post, you would be required to obtain HRSDC confirmation of the job offer in order to be granted a work permit. There are potential exceptions, such as if you are destitute, but Confirmation is the most likely requirement.
