Need Help Obtaining the Proper Work Permit

Postby americanborn on Wed May 04, 2011 3:30 pm

Hello
I am an American currently living and teaching in an American school overseas. My boyfriend, who is Canadian, and I would like to return to North America, preferably to the Toronto area. I have a B.S. in Physical Therapy, Biology and Chemistry along with a Masters Degree in Educational Administration and Leadership. I am in my tenth year of teaching and would like to continue to work in the field of education in Toronto.

My questions are...
1) I have some potential employers in the Toronto area but they are questioning my ability to obtain a work permit in time for the 2011-2012 school year. I'm not sure what the timeline is for getting a permit to work.

2) Which type of permit would I apply for? Temporary? or a permanent one? And is this possible to do online?

3) My boyfriend and I would like to get married and are wondering if it would help my status to work if we were married first - or if this isn't really relevant.

Many thanks for your help.

Most of these questions are Visa related, and more suitable to the other forum.

What caught my eye was that you have spoken with a few contacts regarding teaching positions. Ontario is saturated with teachers at the moment, and I am surprised that some schools are even talking with you. Service Canada would be hard pressed to accept a teacher from outside of the country right now because we have many teachers out of work.

What I think you should do is look along the lines of Physical Therapy. There appears to be a requirement for that in Canada right now.

Thank you for your reply, Andrew.

I am not interested in working in the field of physical therapy so that isn't an option for me.

Secondly, I have only been applying to private or international schools in Toronto since I have IB experience and many of these schools are seeking IB teachers. I am not looking in the public school sector which, as I also know, is saturated with teachers at the moment.
