I want to first heap praises upon the creators of this site. Phone conversations with immigration offices (Canadian, US, or otherwise) are never pleasant.
Anyway, here's my situation:
I am a singer/songwriter from the United States. I was invited to perform with my friend's band in Alberta and jumped at the opportunity. The first time I tried to play in Canada, I had no knowledge of the procedures so I've since studied up on what circumstances require a work permit and HRSDC confirmation (and, more importantly, which ones do not). As this is a singular performance and the show is in April, it would be ideal if I could avoid needing a work permit and confirmation. This would require me to meet the requirements of a "performing artist".
If:
1) The venue receives grants from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts to compensate musicians, and
2) The venue is selling tickets for the event, rather than being open to the general public,
would this satisfy the requirements to consider me a performing artist? I've been in contact with the venue and they say they've had foreign musicians as performing artists in the past, so my outlook is positive. I just would appreciate a vote of confidence!
While we're on the subject, sponsorship by an outside group as opposed to directly booking with a venue seems to be a major consideration when determing a musician's status. If a production company specifically books me at a venue, would that also fulfill the requirements for being a performing artist?
I can clarify my situation as necessary. Thanks very much for the assistance!
