Moving to Canada

Postby Byrtnoth1 on Wed Jan 10, 2007 4:30 am

I'm in the American Military and am an American Citizen, I had the good fortune to meet a wonderful girl from Canada though, and when I get out of the military in June we plan on me moving up to Canada and living together. Possibly in the future we will be married, at least common law after a year of living together if not actually married.

The thing that's worrying us though, is that since I have been in the Marine Corps for 4 years as Infantry, I don't have any professional level job skills. I can get a job offer from Sears Canada possibly as I have a successful record of working there, or perhaps look for work in the oil fields. But she's worried I won't be able to get a work visa, and she can't afford to support me for a year of me not working.

What's the best way to go about getting a work visa before moving up there? And is there any special considerations I need to look up for a non professional job, or former foreign military?

Without a specific offer of employment, it is not possible to say what the requirements of obtaining a work permit will be. However, for the types of positions that you have described, Service Canada Confirmation would be a requirement. This means that the employer will need to be able to demonstrate that Canadians were not available for the position.
