Marrying a Cdn citizen. Wanting to work and apply for PR.

My fiance is an American and we're getting married Sept 1st. I'm also expecting his child which is due at Christmas time. Ideally we would want for him to work to help support the family once we are married. He eventually (sooner rather than later) wants to become a PR. He's 20 years old (I'm 29), has an associate's degree, and has about 18 months of job experience with an ISP's technical support.

After we are married can he apply for an Open work permit? Does this mean once he's approved he can find a job with anyone? Does he have to be in Canada to apply for this? How long is the waiting time? He'll stay in the US working at his job until Oct/Nov if he can apply while out of Canada so that he has income during the process.

Our biggest concern is that he'll be able to support us once we are married.

Thanks for your help.
