Internation Student seeking to start a business

Postby cosmo on Fri Dec 29, 2006 4:32 pm

Hi,

I am an international student here in Ontario, and have finished 2 years of undergraduate study thus far.

I am planning to launch a web based business here and plan to apply for a business license soon.

I would like to know whether I need to apply for a work permit as well. And if yes, how would I reconcile that with my current status as a student.

Thank you for your time.

You will need a work permit. Depending on the province of your residence, you may have already been granted permission to work off-campus part-time on the basis of your study permit. Otherwise a Confirmation may be required first.

A new work permit does not conflict with your existing study permit, but you may need to make it clear in any subsequent application that the work permit is for a position outside of the hours of your education.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Would I still require a work permit if I provide my services only to organizations outside Canada?

I want to set this up as a sole-proprietorship, so I'll be self-employed.

Thanks.

No, not if such organizations have no presence in Canada.
