Getting a visa when already in Canada

Postby hg240 on Mon Mar 19, 2012 2:20 pm

Hi there,

I am a British student who has taken a year out of studies to move to Canada with my partner. He has a one year work placement here with a visa. I moved out to be with him for an extended visit of 6 months. I have now been here for nearly a month and would like to get a temporary work permit. Is there a way of applying for a work visa once already in the country and what would be the quickest way to do this? I know that you have to receive your visa at a port of entry so I would have to leave the country and come back in, but this is not a problem.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Many thanks,
Holly

Assuming that you are in Canada on visitor status, the work permit application will have to be filed outside of the country. However, this can include a port of entry for a British citizen, bearing in mind that you may require a Labour Market Opinion approval in advance of seeking the work permit.
