Finding work in Canada

Discussion of the process and requirements of finding an offer of employment in Canada.

Sir:

I have found it hard to place people in the service industry. The only thing I can suggest is to look at the job boards in Canada and send your CV to positions that are open. See what kind of response you get. I am sure they do hire outside workers in the service industry, but I am not familiar with Newfoundland.

hello:

There are many such positions open in Canada right now. It will depend on your skills and how your credentials are evaluated. Once you have explored that process, the best way is to find work coming in on a Temporary Work Permit. I can advise more if you email me at this forum.

all the best

Hello, I just applied for an animaiton job in Ontario and I was told that the job was full time on site. I told them I was from the US, unfamilar with the process of working in Canada but willing to go thru the steps. She told me to look up the requirements and get back to her. So I'm just trying to gather information.

"First and foremost, your CV must be up to Canadian standards. Almost every CV I see is not, and I cannot stress the importance of an excellent CV before you start your search. This will apply to almost everyone who is reading this post. Your CV must be excellent for a Canadian employer to even consider you for work."

What role does a CV play in getting a work permit, and what are Canadian standards? Also, approximately how long does it take to get a work visa? It's at the very early stage right now, and I know one of the requirements is that they make a reasonable attempt to hire Canadians first which I'm not sure she has done, especially since she doesn't know the specifics of a work permit, which relatively speaking, requires alot more on her company's part than mine. Thanks.

Getting a work permit has nothing to do with your CV. In order to get a job offer, the first thing you must have is a good CV. Employers want to see a CV that has the "feel" of Canada, one they can relate too, and one that is professionally done.

You seem to already have an offer. As for Temporary work permit, see other forums on this site for your answers. I only advise on Employment issues.

Finding your Aunt work is not easy, but it can be done. There are agencies you can use, but be careful with that. Check the job boards like Workopolis.com or Monster.com.

Her CV must be very good, and I can advise more on that if you email me at this forum.

Hi Andrew,
I'm trying to find work in Canada, and I'm living in the UK. I'm here in Canada visiting right now, but I noticed you posted this:
'There is an NOC list with 38 categories that are in big demand in Canada right now'
I was wondering if you could forward that to me as well? I am desperately trying to find a job here in Canada and nobody seems to want to sponsor me since they dont know me, they think its a big hassle. Is there anyway you can help me out? I'm an Electrician with 10 years experience.
I am going to post up my resume to monster.ca and workopolis as well. Thank you this site has been helpful !

There appears to be a demand for plumbers throughout Canada. The difficulty you will face is that employers are unaware of the rules for hiring outside workers, so they will not pay much attention to your inquiries. It requires a significant amount of digging before you find an employer that will even talk to you.

Job creation in Canada is strong again. Our economy never really went into serious decline, so one cannot even call it a recovery. We did have a net loss of jobs, but it was not significant, and was largely in manufacturing and the auto sector.

Email here at this forum and I can address some of your specifics.

Sir:

Normally you have to have a job offer in Canada before you get a work permit. Most work permits are job specific. You have to find an employer that is willing to hire you, then go through the process of getting a work permit.
