Hello!
I'm a young rogue about to leave for Canada for a 'gap year' type of experience, including some snowboarding while the season allows. As I'm only planning on snowboarding for the next month or so, I have purchased only a 3 month insurance contract covering snow sport-related claims. My intention is to then extend the policy after that 3 month period, after which I won't require coverage for snow sports which will make the extended policy significantly more affordable.
I have no employment pre-arranged in Canada (ie. no provided insurance benefits) and I realise that the officer who conducts my work permit interview upon entry into Canada has the authority to reduce the duration of the permit to match the duration of my insurance policy, regardless of whether or not I intend to extend it in 3 months time. I've already consulted a number of travel agents and also the folks at the WHP Section about the situation, all of whom suggested that it entirely depends on the Port of Entry officer conducting the interview.
Should I pre-extend my policy in advance of my departure? I really don't want to have to reapply for the WHP only a few months after getting it in the first place.
