Dual Citizenship?

Postby TouchDown on Sun Jul 27, 2008 7:39 pm

My girlfriend is Canadian..I am an American...if we marry, who has dual citizenship? I have heard she does....and I have also heard I do...and what steps do we need to take to apply for dual citizenship once we are married.

Also, if I move to Canada once we are married, isn't it correct that I need a Permament Residence Request to be approved to begin working (I am a teacher)? If so, where do I apply for that? And if I need a temporary work permit in the interim, where do I apply for that as well?

Thank you so much!!

Both Canada and the USA do permit dual citizenship. However, marriage does not lead to citizenship automatically. In either country, permanent resident status (for example in the family class in Canada) must be pursued, and citizenship is possible thereafter. Either permanent resident status or a temporary work permit are needed to begin working legally in Canada.
