Dual Citizen UK/US moved to Canada - Tax questions

Postby Rae69 on Thu Jul 21, 2011 10:21 am

Hi,

I am a dual citizen UK/US and moved to Canada.

I am here on a yearlong temporary visitor visa while awaiting the Permanent Residency Application process. I am self-employed as an international technical writer with no Canadian clients.

Who do I pay taxes to?

I have researched and talked to the Canadian tax people - they don't know.

i don't want to pay unnecessary taxes and I am not a burden right now on anyone. I believe until I have PR, I am not considered a burden to the Canadian system either (I have no medical card or any other type of identity here). I am however paying 15% tax on everything purchased here and a good 25% of rent goes to taxes.

I am by the book, so basically I am not looking to evade taxes. I was born in England, so I consider that my mother country. My husband is a US citizen and also applying for PR here.

So if anyone knows international tax laws, I would love some help.

Cheers and thanks in advance. :

There are many intricacies to the issue of taxation in your situation. You must find a tax or accounting specialist who has experience in cross-border issues such as this. Based on the information supplied, I would suggest that you are liable for Canadian income tax, but I am no specialist in taxation.
