Does Temp. Work in Canada for Traiing Require a Work Permit?

Postby tbrooke on Tue Jul 20, 2010 10:27 am

Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on my situation, or if anyone has had a similar experience.

I have started working full-time for a company in which I am a significant shareholder. The company is headquartered in Canada, but has a subsidiary LLC in the United States. I am employed by the US company. (I am an Irish citizen with a US green card.)

I have recently arrived in Canada for training at the head office. My intention is to stay for approximately 6 months before returning to the US to open a new office.
I was led to believe that, as I was just training, I did not require a permit. However, at customs/immigration, I had some problems getting in. I was told that Training was a 'gray area' and that if I periodically left Canada within the 6 months, I had no guarantee that I would be allowed back in.
Now I am wondering if I should 'risk it' every time I travel, or whether I would be better trying to get a work permit (if that is even possible now that I am already here).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is no specific exemption from a work permit that would appear to apply under the circumstances described.
