Do I need a work visa?

Postby look1034 on Tue Mar 01, 2011 4:15 am

Hi,

I am a US citizen who intends on marrying a Canadian woman. I have been contracted by one company headquarted in the US, with a office here in Vancouver BC. I have also been hired by another US company based in the US to create sponsorship packages and then secure funding from companies in Canada/US/and other countries. I also have been ask by a company here in Canada to secure advertisement for their magazine. All positions are commission based where I work from home? Do I need a visa? Should I set myself up as corporation in Canada? What should I do?

For any position in which you intend to work for a company with a Canadian division (including via the creation of your own company), you will need a work permit. The exact requirements of such would warrant more detail on the position and your qualifications. For any position in which you intend to work for a foreign company with no Canadian division, often referred to as telecommuting, a work permit is generally not a requirement; there are exceptions to every rule and - again - more detail would be needed to be sure.
