contract work -- hours required?

Hello,

Thanks for any help you can provide. US citizen, visiting Canada, seeking work to get a work permit. A couple of questions:

1. If I want to take on contract tutoring assignments (invoicing the employer), can I apply for a work permit for this? If I can, is there a requirement about how many hours I must work for them per week?

2. In general, must a job be full-time to apply for a work permit for it?

Thanks,
Amy

The type of position that you are referring to would require a Labour Market Opinion from Service Canada prior to eligibility for a work permit. The provisions governing either the LMO or the work permit do not specify a particular number of hours required at a minimum for eligibility. The LMO will require that the conditions of employment are consistent with the local labour market.
