Canadian Work permit for F1 student in US

Postby ritzambi on Wed Sep 21, 2005 2:54 pm

I'm on my F1 student visa in US. Just completed my graduation in Computer Science and got a job offer from a company in Canada. My questions are:
1. Whats the fastest/best way for me to approach my work permit in Canada? Should my company apply for me in Canada, or should I apply in USA in an embassy (I'm an Indian citizen).
2. How long does the work permit usually take?
3. Should I apply for a temperary work permit if thats faster?
4. How much does the process cost?

Thanks a ton.

In response to your questions:

1. An application for a work permit must be submitted to a visa office outside Canada, including those in the USA. If a Labour Market Opinion is required in order to be eligible, then this process is initiated within Canada.

2. Anywhere from 1 day to 6 weeks on average, depending on the circumstances of the case. A Labour Market Opinion (HRSDC) may take 45 days on average.

3. If you are comparing it to a permanent resident application, then yes, a work permit takes substantially less time.

4. The government fee charged for a work permit application is CAD$150.
